Overview of Recent and Ongoing OECD Work on Climate Change

The OECD’s objective is to help its member countries prepare for the future by supporting them with sound policy analysis and options to achieve climate change goals in an environmentally-effective and economically-efficient manner. A number of projects are underway to implement this across several OECD Directorates and in the specialised agencies associated with the OECD, such as the IEA and the NEA. This document highlights this work.

OECD Global Forum calls for more investment in water and sanitation

Water management is a challenge for both OECD and developing countries. Though the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) call for the proportion of people without access to safe water and basic sanitation to be halved by 2015, many countries are not on track to meet these goals. Amid fears that the financial crisis would result in an aid crisis, OECD donors recently made an Aid Pledge, promising to honour their aid commitments, including the water-related MDGs.

Financing and pricing water: The roles of government policies, the private sector and civil society

In his introductory remarks to the Global Forum on Sustainable Development: Financing and Pricing Water, M. Gurría declared that good water management is so fundamental to human and economic development, and to the maintenance of ecosystems, that we cannot afford to fail.

Climate Change Mitigation: WHAT DO WE DO?

Climate change is a fact of life. We need to act urgently if we are to avoid an irreversible build-up of greenhouse gases and global warming at a potentially huge cost to the economy and society worldwide. The economics of climate change lie at the epicentre of any viable solution. This publication summarises recent OECD analyses, including on the role of technological innovation and the impacts of policies to address carbon leakage. It provides arguments to help policy-makers explain why postponing decisions, using the current economic circumstances as an excuse, is a short-sighted policy.

OECD publishes the 2008 investment policy review of China

This publication reviews Chinese government efforts to encourage responsible business conduct against the backdrop of recent regulatory changes and China's increasing outward investment. It assesses the extent to which China's legal and regulatory framework for investment has been improved since the 2006 Review and evaluates recent improvements in China's FDI statistics.

Insights Book on Sustainable Development

As one contribution to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, the OECD has published an Insights Book on Sustainable Development: Linking Economy, Society, Environment. Easy to read, no technical jargon, full of practical examples, this can be a textbook for teaching sustainable development at secondary and tertiary levels of schooling.

Annual Meeting of the EAP Task Force, 23-24 October 2008, Astana (Kazakhstan)

The next meeting of the EAP Task Force will take place on 23-24 October 2008 in Astana, Kazakhstan.  The main purpose of the meeting will be to discuss progress in implementing the the EAP Task Force's Programme of Work, and priority areas of work for 2009 and beyond. The meeting it will start with a special session on  how the challenge of institutional development of Environment Ministries in the region could be addressed, drawing on new approaches being employed by development cooperation agencies in OECD countries.
