OECD governments should continue reforming their sickness and disability systems and help people with health problems to retain their jobs or find new ones, according to a new OECD report.

The OECD has published a new guidance document which focuses on microbiological efficacy testing. It covers efficacy testing of articles treated with antimicrobials in the manufacturing process with the intention of the achieving an external effect. Also included are articles which have been in some way modified during service so as to exert an antimicrobial effect.

OECD Published Pov and LRTP Screening Tool
OECD published the "Pov and LRTP Screening Tool" which has been developed with the aim of using multimedia models for estimating overall persistence (Pov) and long-range transport potential (LRTP) of organic chemicals at a screening level in the context of PBTs/POPs assessments. The Tool calculates metrics of Pov and LRTP from a multimedia chemical fate model, and provides a graphical presentation of the results.

An expert workshop will be held in Cambridge, United Kingdom, to discuss a number of analytical papers that address some key policy issues in the development and uptake of biomarkers. A policy report based on the papers and the workshop discussion is planned for delivery before the end of 2008.

Infectious tropical diseases exact a heavy toll on families, societies and economies, particularly in developing countries. The World Health Organisation estimates that one billion people suffer from these dieases, but there are few new treatments or cures. The OECD's High Level Forum for Neglected and Emerging Infectious Diseases will look at what can be done to address this gap

A range of health policy challenges will be assessed and potential solutions identified in discussion with delegates at this year's forum. Those participating in the event include senior policy and decision-makers representing politics and government at European Union, national and regional levels; business and industry; health care funders and service providers; and civil society; as well as experts and researchers in health care and public health. The OECD is organising a workshop on health workforce shortages and migration and will chair a plenary session on the same theme.
