This year's edition of the Employment Outlook provides analysis covering 30 countries and presents a reassessment of the OECD Jobs Strategy which was discussed at the High-Level Policy Conference: Boosting Jobs and Incomes - Toronto Canada.

LEED project: Integrating employment, skills and economic development

This activity focuses on how the related policy areas be better integrated to maximise benefits for the economy and society in general, fostering business development, the enhancement of skills  and social inclusion. Participating countries include Canada, Greece, Italy, Poland, the USA, Bulgaria, and Romania with the project also receiving support from the European Commission. Countries are invited to express their interest in participating in these reviews.

This event examined both the key instruments put in place and discussed the ways to improve local practices to enhance the skills of low-skilled workers.  The conference gathered together more than 100 participants from all OECD countries. LEED activity: Local Integration of Immigrants into the Labour Market

This study analyses the economic and social policies to foster labour market or overall social integration of immigrants and of persons of immigrant descent in host countries.  Five country studies have now taken place in Canada, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

Inter-Agency Conference on Local Economic Development (LED), Turin, Italy

The ILO in collaboration with the OECD LEED Programme is organising an inter-agency conference on local economic development, meant to take stock of practices around the world and develop a joint strategy for knowledge development and networking. The event will involve several agencies such as UN-HABITAT, UNIDO, UNCDF, SDC (LEDNA), GTZ and IADB.

OECD conference on labour market policy, Venice, Italy, 17-19 April 2008

Should central government leave economic and employment development to local policy makers? Employment ministers from OECD countries, including Finland, Italy, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States, will address such questions at a conference in Venice, Italy, from 17-19 April 2008.

Conference on "From Immigration to Integration: Lessons Drawn from Local Responses", New York City

The results of the LEED's five country reviews on the local integration of immigrants into the labour market were discussed at this conference co-organised with the Federal Bank of New York. The event was attended by 140 delegates, from the US and overseas, including leaders and directors of major US workforce training programmes, community development organisations, unions, foundations, and community colleges, as well as academics, and state and local political leadership.

Conference on "Training Strategies for Regional Competitiveness and Inclusion Through Employment", Seoul, Korea

This event was jointly organised with the Korean Labour Institute, a LEED Partner.  Korea is looking to transform its labour market policy as a tool to foster regional competitiveness and social cohesion.  This conference shared LEED's expertise in this field to facilitate the adoption of models from abroad, such as area-based partnerships and decentralised frameworks. Seminar on "Employment, Economic Development and Local Governance in Lithuania", Vilnius

This event was a platform to debate the results of recent local governance developments in Lithuania in the light of experience from other countries, analyse the main obstacles met and identify ways to progress further. It was organised by the Ministry of Social Security and Labour of the Republic of Lithuania and the OECD (LEED Programme) in co-operation with the European Commission. Seminar on "Employment, Economic Development and Local Governance in Latvia", Riga

This event was a unique opportunity to debate the results of recent local governance developments in Latvia in the light of experience from other countries, analyse the main obstacles met and identify ways to progress further.  In particular it compared the results obtained by new forms of governance experimented with in various parts of the Baltic Rim and addressed some critical issues related to their effectiveness in generating better economic and social outcomes.
